Providing acute hospital and emergency care, the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester maintains 66 beds for inpatient treatment. The Infirmary became the University of Maryland Hospital in 1897 and affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System in 1984. It consists of University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center (Cheverly), University of Maryland Laurel Regional Hospital, University of Maryland Bowie Health Center, as well as a surgery center and several family health and wellness centers in Cheverly, Laurel, and Suitland.
